Paa-ko Recorded Moisture

Observations
AUG 10 Update

August monsoonal moisture was down over our 12 year running average, but our YTD moisture total is currently almost 1" above average.  Albuquerque is now ~1/2" behind YTD average moisture total.

JUL10 Update

July, 2010 fulfilled its role as one of our two primary monsoonal months and posted the third highest July moisture total in the 12 years we've been keeping detailed records.  Assisted by the great moisture start we saw at the beginning of the year, we have maintained an above average moisture total MTM through July and are currently 1.75" above YTD rolling average.  Albuquerque also has an above average YTD moisture total due to July rains.

FYI, the rainfall on July 31st totaled .72" in my gauge (total of both storms). August holds historical potential!

If your interested, here is July's daily moisture.

JUN10 Update

The Paa-Ko June moisture total saw the recording of our third consecutive below average month.  After starting off so strongly in the first three months of the year, we are now only .46" above YTD average. Albuquerque is now almost 3/4 of an inch (.70") below YTD average.

MAY10 Update

Paa-Ko moisture continues to run above YTD average through May of 2010.  We are currently 1.31" above average while, for the same period, metro Albuquerque is .81" behind.

APR10 Update

Attached is the revised 2009 year ending Paa-Ko moisture almanac which now includes total snowfall (64.5") for the past winter season.

Paa-Ko continues to run above YTD moisture average through April of 2010.  We are currently 1.62" above average while metro Albuquerque is .25" behind.  During the winter season of 2009 (Oct-April), we saw the highest accumulated Jan-April snow total (53.00") since detailed compilation began in 1998.

I also update the 2009 Moisture Report for Paa-ko Communities...Jim Kelley

MAR10 Update

March of 2010 saw almost 27" of snowfall for the month, bringing our 2009 Winter snowfall total to 63.75" - the fourth highest total winter snowfall recorded over the past 14 years.  Our winter snowfall average is now up to ~50.5" (Oct-April).  It occasionally snows through the first week of April (last frost is around May 14th), so I will wait until later this month to update the one-page community weather "almanac".  Our first Black-chinned hummingbirds typically show around April 10th, although last year they were earlier.

YTD, Paa-Ko is over two inches above average moisture total while ABQ is .33" below average.

FEB10 Update

For the first two months of 2010, Paa-Ko is running 1.23" ahead of average for Jan-Feb total moisture (rain & melted snow) while Albuquerque is surprisingly .12" behind.

While it may seem we have had a lot of snow, we are currently 12.75" below seasonal average total with March-April to go.  We have seen 36.75" of snow since last October against a total seasonal average of ~49.50" (13 winters).
Jim Kelley

JAN10 Update

Third highest recorded moisture total for January in 12 years.  The 2009 "winter season" snow total remains short of our seasonal ~50" average, but with the recent two storms the total snow loft recorded has climbed to 23.5" with three months to go (see third graphic).

DEC09 Update

It wasn't horrible, but as you can see, we finished the year 1.41" below our 11 year moisture average of 17.24".  Only two months had precipitation totals above the average - September and November - and September was influenced by a record one-day rainfall of 2.51" on 17_Sept.

I've put together a Annual Summary Moisture Report (PDF Format).  Although similar in appearance, please note that the columnar table shown below differs from the one in the attached document - one compares 2008 to 2009 moisture by month and the other illustrates total snow loft (when applicable) compared to monthly moisture from rain and melted snow.  Although there is a wide moisture content range due to "dry" vs "wet" snow, a rough rule of thumb is melted snow is about 10% the volume of the loft.  As an example, the very dry 4" of snow recorded in Paa-Ko on Wednesday and Thursday of this week yielded only .14" (14/100) of moisture.

OCT09 Update

October moisture was average (2.03") and YTD we remain about an inch below the community's 11-year rolling moisture average.

We recorded our first measurable October snowfall in nine years (1.5").  The moisture content of each snowfall is included in the month's moisture recording.

SEP09 Update

A record one-day rainfall recording highlights the September moisture update.  On September 17th we recorded 2.51" which broke the old 8/11/01 record of 2.5"  Our aggregate September, 2009 moisture ranks #8 among all the recorded months in the 11 years I've tracked our rainfall.

We were three inches over our average September rainfall, but we remain ~1" under overall YTD moisture average through September.

Record One-Day Rainfall! (9/17/09)

Life is a contest and records, especially those related to desert moisture, should be celebrated.

I received slightly higher reports from others in the community, but at my gauge on Thursday 9/17/09 we showed 2.51" of moisture for the day - beating the old 2001 Paa-Ko one-day record by .01".

We have caught up to our YTD average moisture total for the development (through September)...Jim Kelley
