On the Road

Road Issues Reported by Residents

Speeding continues to be an issue on some of the roads in Paa-Ko.  Please slow down everywhere - hills, blind curves, roads that have no shoulders, straightaways.  There have been a couple close calls involving a walker and a bicyclist.

Do not pass another car on double yellow line.

Please don't tailgate.

Please do not use inappropriate and rude gestures when passing other cars.

Be respectful and considerate and cautious.

Bears and Trash

Several residents have requested this reminder:

With the very strong winds we have been having, as well as the emerging of the bear population, please don't put your trash bins out until day of pickup.  Also, secure the bins against the winds - and the bears.  If you have to leave your bin outside all week, also secure it so the bears don't get in.  A fed bear is a dead bear.

There have been several trash spills in the neighborhood the past couple of weeks.

Wildlife is Out

Spring is here and the native flora and fauna are active. Hummingbirds are migrating through - help them with energy for the trip.  It’s time to put out your feeders.

Bears are also coming out searching for food.  They love to find hummingbird feeders as well as unsecured trash cans.  Please don't make it easy for them. A fed bear is a dead bear.

A healthy looking mountain lion has been spotted on the north end of Paa-Ko on Mudhead Ct.

Rattlesnakes and other snakes are out.  This time of year, they are usually sunning themselves on a rock or along the edge of the pavement. As it warms up they will enjoy being under a rock or vegetation and sometimes happily wrapped around the cool base of a planter on your porch.   Preferred hunting time is during the night (except for the coachwhip which likes the heat of the day). Keep your ears alert for rattles and always watch your step wherever you may be going.  Coachwhip snakes also like to climb trees. Attached is a photo taken of a red coachwhip in a tree at the golf course several years ago.  Go to READ MORE and then to DOCUMENTS to see it.

As always, be smart and stay alert.

Burglary in Paa-Ko

A burglary has been reported in Paa-Ko.  It happened at 9 Kiva Loop.  The resident has been gone for the winter and her son has been checking on on the house.  On Thursday, March 27th, her son went by her house and discovered that the home had been burglarized.  The door had been forced open and apparently some computers, phone etc had been stolen.

BCSO was called and there is a police report with the BCSO.

If anyone saw anything on or before March 27th, please report it to BCSO at 505-798-7000.  Even the smallest piece of information might be important.

Always stay vigilant and aware - not only for yourself but also for neighbors and our community.

Spring Wildfires - Is Your Go Bag Ready?

FROM EMWPA:

This coming Saturday, March 1, EMWPA will be holding our third educational outreach program. We will be updating the fire weather outlook for the 2025 wildfire season, and we will be holding an updated repeat of the very popular FREE emergency
'GO' Bag program. This will take place at the Sandia Ranger Station meeting room, starting at 9:00 am and scheduled to last until about 12:00 pm.  FYI, for those that already have the bags, you are welcome to attend. It never hurts to review this information. We only have enough GO bags (maximum 50) for 1 per family, so your RSVP is critical. We encourage you to bring your kids, since they should be aware of how to use this emergency bag.

We have made important strides in getting our Zoom production cleaned up. If you do not think you will be able to attend in person, but can connect via Zoom, make sure you let us know in your RSVP. We will simplify what is the Zoom link so it will be easier to use. Please note - if the link is not underlined and blue, it is not a "hot" link. This means that you will have to cut/paste this address into your browser to make it work. It is not necessary to have a Zoom account to join the meeting. Remember to look for this email in your spam folder too.

TO RSVP, click on this link EMWPA.2023@gmail.com

The details for the meeting are in the attached flyer.

Message from the Paa-Ko Sewer Association Board President

PAA-KO COMMUNITIES SEWER ASSOCIATION
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT – MIKE BOICE

January 2025 Update PCSA

As previously reported, we placed Molzen Corbin to produce a Preliminary Engineering Review PER for the entire Paa-Ko Communities Sewer Association system. This was based on a State Grant of $50,000 for the work. The bids were greater than the amount of the grant and Molzen Corbin was at $111K. We decided we could afford the additional monies and that this planning was badly needed so we put Molzen Corbin under contract last November. We appointed our board member Scott Verhines to manage the project as he has spent his entire career doing this kind of work. The project is going quite well, and we expect completion sometime this summer.

Earlier this year we contacted the State to see if they might help with the additional money required. The State came back to us with an offer of an additional $9K as a grant and $60K as a 20-year loan for 1% annual interest.

To be continued!
