Upcoming EMWPA Meeting - September 19

From the East Mountain Wildfire Preparedness Association:

EMWPA is picking up where we left off this past June. We have had a very active wildfire season everywhere except in the EM, thank goodness. And it is not over yet, so we need to get back to preparing and working on hardening your home for future fire seasons.

This first meeting of the fall features our President Jerome Macdonald with a quick recap of where we are, followed by Bernalillo County District 5 Commisssioner Erica Olivas with Bernalillo County updates. Our Vice President and meteorologist extraordinaire Kerry Jones will preview what the fall weather looks like, then EMWPA Member at Large Susan Smith will talk about a very interesting program taking place in the Raven Road area. Finally we will close out the session with Ricky Reedy from Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District will talk about Ciudad's plans for the 2026-27 season. This looks to be a really informative session, so make sure you get your RSVP in before next Saturday.

The meeting will be held at the Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras on Saturday, September 19th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm

Send your RSVP to our email: EMWPA.2023@gmail.com. This session is RSVP required, so get your seat reserved today!

Lost Dog Sophie Update

FROM MICHAEL LANE

SOPHIE HAS RETURNED! After early Wednesday morning when Sophie visited our “Sophie Station” near our front door and ate and drank, we left the doors open all day. Just as the first rumblings of thunder began, we heard the jingling of Sophie’s collar approaching, and she strode in and made straight for Diahann, squealing happily. She is safe, her belly is full, and she beat the rain by about an hour and a half.

Diahann and I (Michael) are deeply humbled and grateful for the outpouring of support we received from the Paako community and even beyond. From our immediate neighbors to people who lived far away and who we did not even know before, your kindness and generosity with your time to go looking for her, send encouraging words to us, help me put up signs and otherwise spread the word, help us search with a drone, check your cameras and alert us immediately about sightings—all of this made it easier for us to walk through the pain of losing Sophie and the worry about her welfare. You all kept us going—thank you from the bottoms of our hearts.

I also have to mention CMM Lost Pet and Humane Trapping; both Diahann and I feel like once we began following their advice to the letter, things started to fall into place.

Hello from the Green Chili Roast and Cook-Off Crew!

We regret to inform you that we will not be hosting the event this year, which was scheduled for 9/26, due to scheduling and unforeseen circumstances. Hopefully those Lemitar chilis will be roasting soon at Triangle Grocery, so we don't miss out on that heavenly smell!"

Paa-Ko HOA Annual Meeting

FROM JIM KELLEY, PAA-KO HOA BOARD

Mark your calendar for our Annual HOA Meeting on the evening of October 14th. Our quarterly HOA sessions are working meetings for Board members, though residents are welcome to attend. The Annual Meeting is scheduled at a convenient time for working families and offers more opportunity to communicate with residents about topics important to you. The session will feature opening remarks by our County Commissioner, Eric Olivas, which you’ll want to hear. We will also discuss dead trees and the removal of forest fuels. We anticipate announcing a formalized tree-removal project, involving the Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District and fuel-removal grants from Ciudad and the East Mountain Wildfire Preparedness Association (EMWPA). We will also discuss a renewed November HOA chipping program.

New Closing Time for Pool and Pool Replastering information

FROM JIM KELLEY - PAA-KO HOA BOARD

New Pool Closing Time

Our community pool will now close at 7 PM due to darkness and the loss of two underwater pool lights. Lighting repairs are planned during the pool replastering, which will also require us to officially close the pool for 2026 at the end of September.

Pool Replastering Project

The Amenities Committee, led by Barbara Morrison, has carefully budgeted for a substantial refurbishment of our community pool (as well as our tennis and pickleball courts). We have already replaced the pool pump that moves water through our filtration system, and you can see improved water clarity, which is also affected by substantial work on water chemistry. The pool is ~17 years old, and while it may not look like it is aging, the plaster veneer is flaking and accumulating in our vacuum filter in increasing amounts. At the end of last season, working with HOAMCO, we selected a pool contractor to perform the substantial repair work and scheduled it for as close to the end of our normal pool season as possible. This is prime pool repair time for our contractor, and scheduling is being adjusted as other jobs are completed. We currently plan to empty the pool at the end of September to prepare for the work. We normally keep the pool open through Balloon Fiesta week, but our closing date will be determined by our contractor's availability. All funding for Amenities projects and repairs comes from annual dues paid by Amenity members, not from our HOA funds.
